Gubbio and Orvieto
Gubbio
This
gorgeous medieval hillside town was first founded by the Etruscans.
Often referred to as "the most beautiful medieval city" of
Europe, the city is protected by perfectly conserved medieval walls.
The architecture is Gothic and Romanesque. places to see include Piazza
della Signoria, Palazzo dei Consoli, Ducal and Podestà Palaces,
Logga dei Tiratori, Mausoleo, and a well-preserved Roman theatre built
in 1 st century BC. On the slopes of Mount Ingino is the Basilica Sant’Ubaldo
which you can get to by a scenic cableway starting from "Porta
Romana".
Gubbio has a very strong artisan ceramic tradition and some exquisite
local dishes (tartufo) and wines.

Orvieto
Another
Romanesque-Gothic town with some really nice restaurants. Its Duomo
was built between1290 and 1320 and has a marble and mosaic façade.
Inside, in San Brizio's Chapel, are frescoes by Luca Signorelli.
The 1520’s Pozzo di San Patrizio (Saint Patrick's well) is designed
as a double helix.
The 12th century Palazzo del Capitano del Mondo, was Orvieto’s
city hall in the Middle Ages. Next to the Duomo, the Papal Palace holds
a museum of medieval artefacts. There’s also an Etruscan Museum
in front of the cathedral and an Etruscan cemetary just outside the
town.
There’s a funicular to get you up to the town top.

All trains take an hour to an hour and twenty minutes from
