Day Trips from Rome
In Tuscany
Florence
The Uffizi Gallery is closed every Monday, and on January 1, May 1, and December 25. Its ticket office is on the ground floor with the Gallery on the second floor. This is an amazing collection including Giotto, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raffaello, and Caravaggio. It’s worthwhile taking your passport with you because some foreign citizens have free access.
Open from Tuesdays to Sundays, 8.15am to 7.00pm (ticket sales end 45 minutes before closing).
This fairly small city is easy to walk around and all of it is picturesque. It has some fantastic shops, especially for leather goods. Some of the things you really must see are:
The Duomo in Piazza del Duomo - its Baptistery was built between the 5th and 12th centuries, and its cupola by Brunelleschi is an engineering masterpiece.
The Galleria dell’Accademia holds Michelangelo’s “David”.
Piazza della Signoria is the hub of Fiorentine life and worth strolling around.
San Lorenzo Basilica’s Medici Chapels are fantastic.
The Pitti Palace on the south bank of the river Arno, has an incredibile art and costume collection.
In Santa Maria Novella, which is right beside the train station, are works by great artists such as Masaccio and Giotto.
