Day Trips from Rome
In Campania
Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum
Naples
This
a fabulous city. Its bay with its views of Capri and Mt Vesuvius alone
makes it worth the trip. A lot of the art from Pompeii and Herculaneum
are in the Museo Nazionale, and the mosaic section is really great.
In Piazza Dante, inside Baroque Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo, there
are works by Ribera.
Castel Nuovo, constructed between 1279 and 1282 for Charles I d’Anjou
has a spectacular Renaissance triumphal arch and inside you can see
Napolitano paintings in the Museo Civico, the Palatine Chapel and the
Sala dei Baroni.
Take the Funiculare Centrale to the fortress Castel Sant’Elmo
and the Martino Museum-Certosa, up on a hill. Certosa di San Martino
is a 17th century charterhouse, and the best example of Baroque architecture
in Naples.
Museo e Galleria Nazionale di Capodimonte in Palazzo Capodimonte,
houses works by artists such as Simone Martini, Gaddi, Daddi, Botticelli,
Filippinoo Lippi, Perugino, Mantegna, Bellini, Raphael, Michelangelo,
Caravaggio, and Tiziano.
This is a wonderful city for just strolling around but stories about
taking care of your wallets and handbags have not been exaggerated.
