Day Trips from Rome

In Campania
Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum

Naples
This a fabulous city. Its bay with its views of Capri and Mt Vesuvius alone makes it worth the trip. A lot of the art from Pompeii and Herculaneum are in the Museo Nazionale, and the mosaic section is really great.

In Piazza Dante, inside Baroque Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo, there are works by Ribera.

Castel Nuovo, constructed between 1279 and 1282 for Charles I d’Anjou has a spectacular Renaissance triumphal arch and inside you can see Napolitano paintings in the Museo Civico, the Palatine Chapel and the Sala dei Baroni.

Take the Funiculare Centrale to the fortress Castel Sant’Elmo and the Martino Museum-Certosa, up on a hill. Certosa di San Martino is a 17th century charterhouse, and the best example of Baroque architecture in Naples.

Museo e Galleria Nazionale di Capodimonte in Palazzo Capodimonte, houses works by artists such as Simone Martini, Gaddi, Daddi, Botticelli, Filippinoo Lippi, Perugino, Mantegna, Bellini, Raphael, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Tiziano.

This is a wonderful city for just strolling around but stories about taking care of your wallets and handbags have not been exaggerated.

How to Get to Naples
A Eurostar train from Rome’s Termini station will take 1 hour and 45 minutes, and slower trains take anything up to 2 hours and 45 minutes. For first class in Eurostar you’ll pay around 33 euros, and around 22 euros for second class seats. The cheaper train fares are about 10 euros.

Easy site for timetables and online tickets: www.trenitalia.com (in English)

How to Get to Pompeii
To get there you have to take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Pompeii Scavi station. Herculaneum is 500 meters downhill from here.

How to Get to Herculaneum
Take the Circumvesuvia train to Ercolano Scavi station.

Train Tickets

A faster option to waiting in line at the Termini ticket office is to use their vending machines. You’ll find several of them placed just past the ticket office. Their instructions have a language choice and are very easy to follow. Most trains run by the hour or the half hour so there isn’t usually a problem getting a seat.
