Colosseum (Monti Neighorhood)
The Monti neighborhood is the largest and one of the most appealing neighborhoods of Rome, as well as the heart of the city's archeological treasures. Starting with the Colosseum, you can work your way to the Domus Aurea, Trajan's Baths, Trajan's Market, sections of the Aurelian walls, the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli which houses Michelangelo’s Moses, the Church of Santa Francesca Romana, the Papal Palace, the Egyptian Obelisk, the Holy Steps and the Basilica of St. John in Lateran, among many others.
Today the main area of Monti is characterized by narrow, up-and-down sloping streets (Via Panisperna, Via del Boschetto, Via dei Serpenti) intersected by three main avenues (Via Nazionale, Via Cavour and Via Merulana) that serve as vital public transportation routes to and from all parts of the city.
Streets off the main avenues have a variety of good-quality Roman as well as ethnic cuisine restaurants, boutiques and cafes.
